Silky soft and incredibly easy: this beginner’s beanie is your new winter favorite for first-time knitters
During the dark winter months, there’s nothing better than surrounding yourself with warm, cozy knits. The silk-soft Lohtu beanie by Annette Saksman is so comfortable you’ll want to wear it every day! The secret to this easy beanie lies in its contrasting folded brim, but you can also knit it in one color if you prefer.
Size: one size (fits a head circumference of about 56–59 cm or 22–23”).
Lohtu beginner’s beanie—materials
- Yarns: Sandnes Garn Tynn Silk Mohair (57% mohair, 28% silk, 15% wool, 25 g = 212 m or 232 yd), 50 g, shade 5235 Pasjonblomst; and Gepard Kid Seta (70% mohair, 30% silk, 25 g = 210 m or 230 yd), 50 g, shade 640 Iris
 - 5 mm 40 cm (US 8, 16”) circular needles and 5 mm (US 8) double-pointed needles, or the size you need to achieve gauge
 - 6 stitch markers (one distinctive marker for the start of the round).

Note! Because you’ll be knitting from both ends of each skein, it’s simpler if you have two skeins of each shade, i.e., 2 × 25 g. The total yarn usage is about 55 g: you’ll use 30 g of the darker Iris shade and 25 g of the lighter Pasjonblomst.
Gauge: 15 sts and 21 rounds = 10 cm (4”).
Abbreviations
- st = stitch
 - k = knit
 - p = purl
 - rnd = round
 - sm = slip marker.

Lohtu beginner’s beanie—instructions
- Cast on 84 sts with four strands of yarn on 5 mm (US 8) 40 cm (16”) circular needles. Use both ends of two skeins to get four strands. Join in the round and place a marker at the start of the round.
 - Work a 1×1 ribbing [in Finnish] *k1, p1*. Repeat *—* to the end of the round. Continue for about 15 cm (6”).
 - Switch to the lighter yarn. Keep working 1×1 rib until the piece measures about 20 cm (8”).
 - Work one more round in rib, placing the remaining stitch markers every 14 sts. You now have a total of 6 markers, one marking the start of the round.
 - Continue in rib and at the same time begin the crown decreases. They occur every other round, each decrease round reducing 6 sts. Work them as follows:

- 1st round: *Knit 12 sts, k2tog, sm.* Repeat *—* to the end of the round. 78 sts remain.
 - 2nd round: Rest round: work sts as they appear.
