Wallpapering a cabinet: here’s how to make it the most beautiful piece in your home
Wallpapering a cabinet is easy, even if you’ve never hung wallpaper before. You can give your plain cabinet character and style with beautiful wallpaper and matching furniture paint.
Materials needed for wallpapering a cabinet:
- Cabinet (these instructions use an ‘Ivar’ cabinet from Ikea)
- Wallpaper
- Furniture paint and a roller or brush
- Tape measure
- Ruler and pencil
- Scissors or a utility knife
- Wallpaper paste
- Water-soluble universal glue
- Wallpaper brush

You can use any paper instead of wallpaper for the cabinet makeover, as long as it’s sturdy enough to prevent glue from soaking through. If necessary, reinforce the surface with varnish. ‘Ivar’ cabinet from Ikea; Chalky furniture paint in shade ‘Bramwell’; ‘Dahlia Garden’ wallpaper by Boråstapeter from K-Rauta.
How to wallpaper a cabinet
- Wipe the cabinet doors clean of grease and dirt.
- Paint the sides of the cabinet, the shelves, and the inside of the doors.
- Measure the areas to be wallpapered precisely. Cut the wallpaper about a millimeter smaller than your measurements, as it will expand when it gets wet.
- Wallpaper the cabinet’s back wall and doors with a mixture of half wallpaper paste and half water-soluble universal glue.
- If the wallpaper instructions specify a soaking time for the paste, follow them even when using the glue-paste mixture.
- Smooth out air bubbles using a wallpaper brush or your hand for smaller surfaces.

Pick the paint color from the wallpaper to create a cohesive look.

You can finish the cabinet with detachable legs.
