Revive that retro vibe in your bathroom—modern comforts included
You don’t have to sacrifice your bathroom’s original spirit when renovating—instead, think of it as an opportunity to bring back the building’s historical charm. Here are a few ways to stylishly combine vintage elements with modern comforts.
A light classic

An open washstand is an airy and practical choice for a small, narrow bathroom. Its clean lines and subtle tone bring in a 1930s–1940s vibe. Pair it with a partial-inset door design, in which the door sits partly inside the frame with visible hinges—a detail well suited to period-style bathrooms. Kvänum’s Trolle series open washstand is sold by Creanno.

Inspired by the subway

A beveled-edge tile is a timeless classic that has never gone out of style. It was already in use at the turn of the century in the Paris and London subway tunnels. Meanwhile, art nouveau–style wallpapers featured stylized plant motifs. The backlit Corona Oval mirror from Dansani is available at Laattapiste.

Tiled wallpaper

Soft hues and delicate furniture lie at the heart of 1950s style. If you’re unsure about using wallpaper in a bathroom, bring floral patterns inside through tiles. The Cottage Garden Blue tile by Original Style adds old-fashioned charm—and will remain eye-catching for years to come. A checkered floor provides crispness and period-appropriate graphic flair.

Eye-catching surfaces, thoughtful shapes

Vibrant terrazzo tiles bring a dynamic rhythm to the walls, recalling 1950s–1960s bathrooms. Finish the look with a mirror that complements the style—for example, a rounded metal-framed mirror that appears old but is actually modern. The vanity and mirror in the Ducentic series are from Gustavsberg.
Layers of eras

Even subtle references to past eras can create a timeless feel. The 1960s–1970s influence comes through the teak veneer, black details, and the herringbone wall tiles. The overall style is fresh and modern but stays faithful to its original construction period. The vanity is by Blau.

A well-planned whole

A vintage-style bathroom isn’t achieved by a few elements alone; it’s defined by how everything works together. A freestanding tub often serves as the centerpiece, with other elements arranged around it. Hexagonal floor tiles and natural materials fit the era. A wall tiled with 6” × 6” tiles is a timeless choice. Laundry basket and jute rug by Dixie.
Bold colors

Dark tones, strong contrasts, and rugged surfaces from the late 1960s and early 1970s are making a comeback in bathrooms. If you’re after atmosphere, don’t shy away from color. A 3D tile that imitates bamboo on the wall and the Chicco Verde terrazzo tile on the floor create a striking pair. These tiles can be found at ABL-laatat.
