Knit a classic gray beanie in just two evenings
Ahoy, sailor! A stylish gray beanie pairs well with many outfits. It fits comfortably and is easy to knit.
Size: Men’s size: fits a head circumference of approximately 56–59 cm (22–23 in)
Men’s beanie—materials:
- 100 g (3.5 oz) of gray (1042) Ulla yarn, 100% wool, about 200 m (218 yd) per 100 g
- Circular knitting needles in sizes 3.5 mm and 4 mm (40 cm (16 in) long), plus 4 mm double-pointed needles
Stitch patterns:
- Rib stitch: Work in the round: *2 knit, 2 purl*, repeat from *—*.
- Garter stitch: Work in the round. Round 1: purl. Round 2: knit. Repeat rounds 1–2.
- Stockinette stitch: Work in the round, knitting every stitch.
Gauge: 20 sts and 30 rounds of stockinette stitch = 10 cm (4 in).
Tip!
For a stretchier brim, knit it in a 1 knit, 1 purl rib. The 2 knit, 2 purl rib is less elastic.
Men’s beanie—instructions:
Cast on 100 sts with the smaller circular needle and work ribbing for 15 cm (6 in). Switch to the larger needles and knit 6 rounds of garter stitch, increasing 2 sts on the 2nd round = 102 sts. Then knit 2 rounds of stockinette. Mark the beginning of the round and begin the crown decreases. Move the stitches to double-pointed needles when the circular becomes too tight.
Round 1: *Knit 15, purl 2 together, repeat from *—* to the end of the round (= 6 decreases).
Rounds 2–3: Knit.
Round 4: *Knit 14, purl 2 together, repeat from *—* to the end of the round.
Rounds 5–6: Knit.
Round 7: *Knit 13, purl 2 together, repeat from *—* to the end of the round.
Knit 2 rounds without decreasing. Continue in this manner until you have 66 sts left. Decrease every other round 6 more times = 30 sts. Then decrease every round and pull the yarn through the last 6 sts. Tighten and fasten off.
Fold the ribbed edge up to meet the garter stitch edge. Your gray beanie is ready!
