Buttons from avocado seeds! Here’s how to make beautiful wood-like buttons yourself
Transform avocado seeds into beautiful, wood-like buttons polished to a shine with oil. These avocado buttons are perfect for cardigans and other garments that are not washed often.
Avocado buttons—materials you’ll need:
avocado seeds
sharp kitchen knife
metal cutters
drill
sandpaper or nail file
coconut oil
Avocado buttons—instructions:

1. Remove the seeds from the avocados, wash them, and peel them. Dry the seeds and your hands before cutting.

2. The avocado seed consists of two halves. Find the center of the seed and slice it into approximately 5 mm thick pieces parallel to the center line. As it dries, the avocado shrinks slightly in all directions, and thinner slices are more likely to warp when dried.

3. Use a mold to cut button blanks out of the slices, or cut them freehand with a knife. The color of the seed will begin to change to a reddish hue immediately after cutting.
4. Place your buttons in a well-ventilated area to dry for about a week. Turn the buttons a few times during the drying process.

5. Once the buttons are dry, drill holes in them using a small drill bit. Sand the edges and surfaces of the buttons with sandpaper or a nail file. The sanding dust from an avocado is very fine, so it’s advisable to wear a mask during this step.

6. Rub coconut oil onto the surface of the buttons with a cloth to deepen their color and give them a shine. Blot excess oil with a paper towel.
Tip!
Wash the avocado buttons by hand. When wet, the buttons become flexible but will harden again when dry.
