Arabia’s old planters are coveted flea market finds—besides their beautiful design, they help your plants thrive

Vintage planters by Finnish ceramics company Arabia are attracting attention at flea markets and vintage shops. Your houseplants will also appreciate the ceramic planters designed by Richard Lindh, as they excel at their job.

The planter you choose for your houseplant can make a big difference. Planters produced by Arabia have become popular flea market finds.

The most sought-after Arabia planters are ones from the SN1 series by Richard Lindh (1929–2006). They are still widely available since they were produced for over twenty years (1964–1985) and were already very popular in their time.

Richard Lindh worked at Arabia in various design roles for over 35 years and designed his first planters in the late 1950s. These early planters still display the organic shapes typical of that era.

In 1959, Lindh arrived at a cleaner, almost austerely simple style with his conical SL3 planter series, followed three years later by the square LB2 series. The cylindrical SN1 series planters introduced next were produced mostly in white and black, but there are also blue, brown, and hand-decorated versions.

The secret of Lindh’s planters’ popularity has never lied solely in their stylish appearance. Plant enthusiasts know that these planters fulfill their purpose exceptionally well: made of hard faience, they keep the soil suitably moist while allowing the plant’s roots to breathe.
