I found a solution to my longing for beauty and objects—and it doesn’t cost a thing

In a world where everyone seems to be scaling back, it feels radical to say you’re a fan of objects. How can you enjoy beautiful things without the burden of consumption and ownership?

I recently came across Finnish actor Miitta Sorvali's interview in which she said she’s a fan of beauty and items. It felt refreshingly radical in a world where everyone seems to be constantly paring down, organizing, streamlining, and just trying to get rid of their stuff.

It’s perfectly acceptable to say you got rid of six Ikea bags worth of stuff over the weekend, but would you casually say you carried six bags in? At least that wouldn’t be something to brag about, unless you happen to live in a completely empty home.

Going on a carefree shopping spree for brand-new items isn’t responsible by any measure, and even buying secondhand will eventually test the limits of your closet space, at the least.

But items—aren’t they just delightful! Vintage dishes, vases, silly yet cute objects, beautiful fabrics, and lovely dresses, shoes, and handbags—anyone who loves beauty will understand.

I’m partial to items, but I’m finally realizing that I don’t need to own every beautiful object in the world. After all, objects also come with responsibility. You have to maintain them, dust them off, try not to break them, and figure out where to store them. Because I don’t want additional stress, I’ve decided to take great care of the treasured items I already have and be extremely selective about picking up anything new or used. It goes more or less well.

I recommend ‘just looking’ outings for all fellow beauty and object enthusiasts who feel a bit anxious about owning things.

As a way to satisfy my craving for beauty, I’ve started wandering around. I head into town—preferably on my own—and take my time in galleries, flea markets, and the few remaining brick-and-mortar shops, soaking in the visual treats and fresh ideas. Afterward, I feel as though I’ve breathed a gust of fresh air.
