Anne crocheted a stunning dress for her daughter’s wedding with no pattern: “At times I thought I was completely crazy!”
Finnish Anne Liimatainen crocheted a dress for her daughter’s wedding with no instructions. She had the idea in October 2024, and in July, she celebrated her daughter while wearing the dress she made herself.
Last autumn, when Anne Liimatainen learned her daughter would be getting married in the summer, she also began a new job involving an hour-long bus ride each day. The long commute gave her plenty of time for crafts, and that’s when she got the idea to crochet her own dress for her daughter’s wedding.
Before this, Anne had only crocheted granny squares, although she had done plenty of knitting. Online, she found a beautiful crocheted dress described as practically making itself by being assembled from individual pieces. Inspired, Anne decided to challenge herself and make a dress of her own.
“I figured that if I could crochet granny squares, I could handle this too.”

Because crocheting wasn’t one of Anne’s strengths, she decided to keep the dress as simple as possible, using only double crochet and chain stitches. She didn’t have a pattern or even a plan. She simply ordered yarn, got a crochet hook, and started.
“Making the dress felt like putting together a jigsaw puzzle. At first, I had no idea how the pieces would fit.”
Anne says she normally follows instructions for her crafts. In that sense, this dress was a completely new kind of project for her.
“At times I thought I was completely crazy for doing this with no instructions!”
Anne says she didn’t want to get stressed about the dress, so she worked on it bit by bit. With her new job, it provided a relaxing counterbalance.
“It was a kind of mindfulness exercise for me,” Anne explains.

The dress was finished just in time for the mid-July wedding, and many friends and acquaintances were amazed by it.
“Some people asked if I really made it myself.”
Anne also posted a photo of the dress on Facebook, where she received lots of compliments and a nudge to keep crocheting. While she’s proud of her accomplishment, she isn’t ready to swap her knitting needles for a crochet hook.
“Then again, I have a son, too, who might get married someday. We’ll see what I come up with for that celebration!”
