Finished size: 73 cm x 120 cm (29″ x 47″).

Anemone wall rug—materials:

  • 18-ply Molla cotton twine (100% cotton, 500 g = approx. 840 m) 380 g in tomato (44) and 250 g in jade (51)
  • 18-ply Liina cotton twine (100% cotton, 500 g = approx. 840 m) 560 g in natural white (1) and 65 g in black (80).
  • 3.5 mm (US E-4) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
  • 73 cm (29″) hollow aluminum rod and strong fishing line.

Technique

This piece is worked in tapestry crochet, in rows of double crochet with four different colors, following the chart. Read odd-numbered (right-side) rows from right to left, and even-numbered rows from left to right. Carry two strands of yarn inside the stitches throughout, but always leave the black yarn to wait on the wrong side when not in use. When changing colors, work the final yarn-over of the previous stitch with the new color. Keep the carried yarns tight enough so no loose loops are left at color changes. Keep all yarns at an even tension, and work your stitches as snug as possible. Always work the last stitch of each row without carrying the yarns.

Gauge: 25 sts and 11 rows = 10 cm (4″).

You can also download the chart as a printable PDF at the end of this article.

Anemone wall rug—pattern:

With natural white yarn, ch 182 for the foundation chain.

Row 1 (RS): Dc in the 4th ch from the hook, bring in the red and green yarn, then with white yarn dc in each ch, carrying the colored yarns inside the stitches. Work the last dc of the row without the carried yarns = 180 sts. At the end of every row, ch 3 to turn (counts as the first dc of the next row).

Rows 2–4: With white yarn, dc in each st, carrying the colored yarns inside the stitches. Work the last st of the row without carrying the colored yarns. Ch 3 to turn.

Row 5: With white yarn, dc in next 94 sts while carrying the colored yarns, switch to green yarn and dc in next 12 while carrying white and red, then with white yarn dc in next 74 carrying the colored yarns. Remember to work the last dc without the carried yarns, then ch 3 to turn.

Rows 6–24: Crochet according to the chart.

Row 25 (RS): With white yarn, dc in next 16 sts, then with red yarn dc in next 34. Bring in black yarn and dc in next 14 with it, then leave black to wait on the wrong side. With red yarn, dc in next 36, green yarn dc in next 52, white yarn dc in next 28, then ch 3 to turn.

Row 26: With white yarn, dc in next 28, green yarn dc in next 54, red yarn dc in next 32, pick up the black yarn and dc in next 20 with it, leave the black yarn again, red yarn dc 32, white yarn dc 14, then ch 3 to turn.

Continue following the chart. Finish by working 6 rows with white yarn. Cut the colored yarns, finish the last row with ch 3, turn, and begin crocheting a channel for the hanging rod: With the smaller hook, work dc for as many rows as needed to make a channel that fits the rod. Leave enough yarn for sewing. If you like, make a similar channel at the bottom edge and slide in a flat wooden or aluminum strip.

Finishing

Sew the rod channels on the wrong side. Insert the rod at the top and, if you like, a flat strip at the bottom. Thread the fishing line through the rod, tie the ends together firmly, and hide the knot inside the rod.

Anemone wall rug designed by Molla Mills
If you crochet a rod channel at the bottom edge as well as the top edge, it helps the wall hanging lie neatly.
