6 bold color ideas

Goodbye, dullness: how to bring color and warmth to your home

When your home needs a cozy atmosphere, bring in color. Brown, blue, and yellow are particularly appealing right now. Interior journalist Natalia Rehbinder has picked six of the season’s most irresistible ideas.

1. Focus on the walls (and door frames)

A checkered wallpaper may sound bold, and it certainly is, but it also looks absolutely fantastic! Ellen Berggren’s wallpaper design is both traditional and cozy, yet surprising and modern.

Tip

Pick a shade from the wallpaper and paint your door frames to match the color scheme.

2. No empty walls

Handicraft skills and Swedish folk heritage have inspired Ikea’s fall collection. A cozy abundance is created with soft cotton throw pillows and naive-style wall images. A blue wall is the finishing touch.

3. Pick three colors and repeat them

A pink wall, coffee-colored trim, and a dark red cabinet are stunning together. When you want to add color to your interior, a good rule of thumb is to pick three distinct colors and repeat them—and their various shades—across surfaces, furniture, textiles, and decorative elements.

The Jotun paint shades are Sophisticated red 2951, Coffee 2149, and Pink Ambience 20362.

4. Timeless reddish-brown works in many spaces

Reddish-brown is strongly making a comeback in interiors, and rightly so. This elegant, timeless shade suits kitchens, bathrooms, and furniture. Small floral, check, and striped throw pillows are the big trend this fall.

For more information, Ikea.

Tip

Soft shades of reddish-brown work well not only on furniture but also on larger surfaces, pairing beautifully with green or blue hues.

5. Choose a striking color pair

Mint green and dark red create a dynamic color duo. This bold contrast also works in a small space.

6. Checks & flowers always work

This fall, floral patterns, checks, and stripes come together deliciously. The bold checkered floor, blue stairs, and yellow railing are a perfect match with a rich, multicolored floral fabric.
