Create a magical 3D landscape in a bottle—and bring it to life with lights
This miniature version of a light-up artwork is created by painting a beautiful landscape on a glass bottle. The image comes alive when you illuminate the bottle from within.
Light-up artwork in a bottle—materials
- An empty glass bottle
- Acrylic paint
- One large and one small paintbrush
- A kitchen sponge
- Twine or lace ribbon
- A small battery-powered string of fairy lights.
Light-up artwork in a bottle—instructions

1. Soak the bottle in warm water and peel off any labels.

2. Cut a piece from the kitchen sponge to use as a dabbing tool, and use white paint to create tree trunks and branches of the spruces around the bottle. Paint every other spruce slightly smaller and lighter so they appear farther away in the landscape. Continue adding details to the spruces in the foreground. Paint the bottle’s neck and lower part to look snowy, blending the edges of the paint so they soften. Let dry.

3. Dab some light blue paint in the center of the larger spruces. Let dry.

4. Using a large flat brush, paint the branches of the larger spruces white. A flat brush makes it easy to dab paint precisely where you want. Let dry.

5. Use a small brush to fill in the lower parts of the branches with green acrylic paint.

6. Paint stars in the sky and let snowflakes drift gently down the scene. Let dry.
7. Finish the bottle by tying a bow of twine or lace ribbon around its neck. Thread in the lights.
